Death of a Tug Boat
24 x 36, oil

This is a painting of the D. T. Sheridan Tug Boat. Wrecked in Lobster Cove on Monhegan Island, Maine, in 1948.

I painted on Monhegan Island for a few days in September 2003. All the visitors walk the trail out to Lobster Cove to see the shipwreck and so did I. My first sight of the Tug Boat wreck filled me with sympathetic feelings, probably because of my life with the sea and time that I spent as a tug boat cook in the merchant marines.

The wreck was more that the inanimate shell of a tug boat to me. It resembled the dead hulk of a whale on the jagged rocky beach. A lonely cold windswept grave.
